The Betty

Where do we even start with the Betty!? Perhaps we start at the beginning which was Lauren at LP Designs. We met with her in 2018 with a dream to build our first custom home. We explained to her the key features we wanted to see and she took it from there. It was very important to us that the home be as far into the ground as possible. We wanted the flow of people to feel seamless from the exterior to the interior. After we started with Lauren, we realized we needed the help of an interior designers and thus began the Hella/Miter relationship. Rehanna and Breanna from Hella Design Studio, quickly understood our desire to mix modern farmhouse with just straight up modern. As the Betty started to take shape, we brought in Katherine from Your Space By Design, she designed our landscaping which put the cherry on top of this delicious sundae.

When deciding on colours, we wanted to keep things simple. Black and white was the answer. We didn’t want an all black or all white house so we started playing around with mixing up where each colour would go. We decided to have a mostly white front and then do the opposite on the back. The centre of the front of the house is black board and baton with a metal roof over the front door. We added a cedar ceiling to the front door roof to tie in with the cedar corbels. Gold house numbers add a bit of flash to the front.

Our windows from Lux are a huge statement piece. We went with black aluminum clad exteriors. Our living room windows are pretty much floor to ceiling and help bring the outside in, which was important to us. We also added HUGE French doors between the dining room and the backyard. These doors help connect the backyard lounge space with the rest of the great room. Katherine designed a beautiful patio that included a firetable. The firetable throws off major heat and we can use it in the summer and winter.

Key points about the backyard and back exterior:

  • Minimal steps out of the French doors on to the patio
  • Large patio to accommodate an outdoor sofa and multiple chairs
  • Mixture of stone finishes, pavers for the patio, poured concrete for the walkway between the patio and garage
  • Concrete fire bowl
  • Natural privacy screen from the columnar crab apple trees
  • Update playhouse to fit the backyard aesthetic
  • Irrigation system to keep all the plants and grass happy
  • Modern horizontal fence boards
  • Black (BM Onyx) hardy board on the living room exterior wall
  • White stucco around the kitchen window
  • White board and baton around the upper window and two-story dining room window

Key points about the front yard and front exterior:

  • No steps to the front door
  • Front seating area
  • Pavers as steps to connect the side walkway and the front walkway
  • Kept the original front trees and designed the landscaping around them
  • Added large stone blocks to create levels around the tree flower beds
  • White hardy board on the right side of the house
  • A mixture of white stucco and board and baton on the left
  • ¾ glass front door
  • Up/down lighting framing the front office window
  • Side metal gate with horizontal bars to compliment the fence
